A 12-week course for learning heart-felt communication
Good communication is more likely to get everyone’s needs met. How is that achievable in the middle of a conflict? What happens when we are being criticized? Do we feel like thinking about our partner's needs when we are angry or resentful? What happens when we let our partner down and there are feelings of guilt or shame? How do we deal with our partner saying no to sex… yet again?
Ongo is a way to practice listening and talking that can help build intimacy, love, and connection. It helps with building language for talking about resentments, rejection, and frustrations without getting into negative criticism or blaming. Ongo helps with saying what we are thinking, in order to be more open about our feelings and to state our needs.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC): NVC is an approach to communication developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg based on principles of nonviolence. It is not a way to end disagreements, but rather a method designed to increase empathy and improve the quality of life. NVC focuses on effective strategies for meeting the needs for all parties in a conversation. The goal is interpersonal connection, obtaining insight for future cooperation, and making life more wonderful.
Ongo simply means ongoing and relates to the idea of having an ongoing practice. In the book the authors Catherine Cadden and Jess Wiens have bought into synergy three streams of learning; Non-violent Communication, a Zen form of practice, and working with somatic experience. What they have compiled, in my mind, are simple easy to use methods that teach us to connect to our heart, feel our embodied experience and share our needs in a clear compassionate manner.
The outcomes from participating in Ongo practice are:
